Department of English

About Department:

The Department of English was established in the same year as the founding of the College, i.e., 1956. The Department has a glorious tradition of eminent scholars who have served both as Heads of the Department and as faculty. These renowned savants include Father Victor Rocha, Sr. Eleanor, Fr. Lawrence Fernandes and Mr. A. M. George.

Vision: To enhance proficiency in the use of the English Language.

Mission: To Inspire and Motivate students to acquire and appreciate the nuances of the English Language in a global context.

Courses Offered:

Three-year Bachelor of Arts Degree Course wherein the subject is offered as:

Compulsory English

Supplementary English

English Literature

Communicative English (self-financed) a vocational subject introduced by the UGC in only select colleges to train students for career opportunities in mass media.

Three years Bachelor of Science wherein English is a Compulsory Subject. Supplementary English is an optional Subject.

Course Structure:

Duration of the Course:

It is a Grant-in-aid Under-graduate course affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur. Approved by the Government of Maharashtra and recognized by UGC under 2f and 12b.

The Course is of three years duration. Examinations are conducted annually by RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur.

Communicative English:

The College offers Communicative English as an elective to UG students. It is a UGC vocational course that offers several career opportunities to the students in various industry sectors like media and mass communication, advertising and hospitality, travel and tourism, etc. Besides imparting language skills, the Course helps learners to develop their personality and to face the challenges of the future with confidence.

Admission Criteria:

Students who have passed the H.S.S.C. (10 plus 2) level are eligible for admission to the B.A. /B.Sc. Course. At the B.A. level students can opt for Supplementary English, English Literature, Communicative English as electives, apart from Compulsory English. B.Sc. First year students can offer Supplementary English as a second language besides Compulsory English.

The Department of English is equipped with a departmental library housed in the Department of Communicative English.

The English Language Association conducts activities like debates, elocution etc. to tap the latent skills of students.

The Department of English has served the college with a rare spirit of dedication and a true sense of purpose.

English Literary Association (ELA):

The ELA aims to cultivate and promote cultural and aesthetic sense among the students. It has been formed to tap the literary potential of the students. It fosters a love for literature by organizing a number of activities related to debate, quiz, movie screening, skits, and poetry and essay competitions each year. It provides a platform to the students to display their talents and excel in various events. The activities also help instill in the students self-reliance and confidence.

The association has organized various competitions to encourage and motivate the students to inculcate in them a love of literature.

Apart from this, various films based on the present R.T.M. Nagpur University Syllabus have been shown. For example Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar were screened for the ELT students in the session 2013-2014.
